Parasitic draw test procedure:

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Set your multimeter to amps (10A range), connect in series between the negative cable and battery post.
  1. Wait 10-20 minutes for modules to go to sleep. Some GM vehicles need up to 30 minutes.
  1. Read the draw. Normal parasitic draw for a 2018 Silverado should be under 50mA (0.050A). GM spec is typically 40-50mA max.
  1. If over limit: Pull fuses one at a time until the draw drops. That circuit is your culprit.

Common offenders on these trucks:

  • Aftermarket electronics (dash cams, trailer brake controllers)
  • Faulty ignition switch
  • BCM or radio staying awake
  • Aftermarket alarm/remote start
