  1. DEF contamination – Drain a sample from the tank. Contaminated DEF (with water, oil, or diesel) turns cloudy or crystallizes. Use a refractometer to verify 32.5% urea concentration.
  1. DEF quality sensor – Scan for codes (typically P0600 series). A faulty sensor can falsely report poor quality.
  1. NOx sensors – Faulty NOx sensors can trigger DEF warnings. Check upstream and downstream NOx sensor readings.
  1. DEF pump/heating – Ensure the pump primes and the fluid is above 10°F (-12°C). Frozen DEF is normal in cold weather but should thaw.
  1. Recent fill location – Cheap or off-brand DEF can be out of spec. Only use ISO 22241-compliant DEF.

DEF Rules (EPA 40 CFR Part 85.5001):

  • Must be minimum 32.5% urea solution (ISO 22241 standard).
  • Contaminated DEF voids emissions warranty and can damage SCR catalyst.
  • Tampering with DEF system (deleting, bypassing) is a federal violation.

Action: If DEF tests good, clear codes and reset. If warning returns, replace the DEF quality sensor or NOx sensors. Advise customer to only use name-brand DEF from reputable truck stops.

Derate will limit engine power until resolved—don’t ignore it.

Immediate Checks (In Order):

  1. DEF Quality/Concentration: Use a refractometer (not test strips) to verify 32.5% urea concentration. Target: 1.087–1.093 specific gravity @ 20°C. If out of spec, tank must be drained and refilled with fresh API-certified DEF (ISO 22241).
  2. DEF Age/Storage: DEF degrades >86°F or <12°F. Shelf life: 1 year max. Ask for delivery ticket/receipt. If stored in truck bed in summer, it’s likely cooked.
  3. Contamination: Check for coolant (pink/green), diesel, water, or tap minerals in tank. Even 1% coolant kills the SCR catalyst. Smell for ammonia (sharp) vs. diesel/sweet coolant.
  4. NOx Sensors & Dosage Valve: Scan for P20EE (catalyst efficiency), P204F (reductant quality), P2BAE (NOx sensor rationality). Live data: Compare upstream/downstream NOx; they should converge after dosing. Check DEF pressure (typically 700–1000 kPa / 100–145 psi) and injector spray pattern (remove, key-on/engine-off, command prime).
  5. SCR Catalyst: If DEF was bad/low for extended period, catalyst may be poisoned (crystallized urea deposits). Requires temp gun check across brick (ΔT > 100°F = active regen working; ΔT low = dead cat).

DEF Rules (EPA 40 CFR 1036 / ISO 22241):

  • Must meet API Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Mark.
  • 32.5% high-purity urea + 67.5% deionized water. No additives, no agricultural urea.
  • Freeze point: -11°C (12°F). System has tank/line heaters—verify they work (amp draw).
  • Do not dilute. Do not use "water remover" or additives.

Derate Reset: After fixing root cause, requires OEM scan tool (wiTECH/Dealer) to run "SCR Catalyst Reset" / "DEF Quality Learn" and clear derate counter. Generic scanners cannot clear the derate countdown on 2019 Rams.

Bottom Line: If refractometer fails, drain tank, flush with distilled water, refill fresh API DEF, run quality learn. If passes but code returns, suspect NOx sensors or doser.
