Diagnostic Path (Paccar MX-13 / EPA 2017+):

  1. Check ECM Calibration: Verify latest calibration (Davie4/Paccar Solutions). Early calibrations had aggressive EGR maps causing soot spikes. TSB 2019-004 / 2020-012 apply.
  2. Live Data During Forced Regen (Davie4): DOC Inlet Temp: Must hit >550°F (288°C) sustained. If it stalls at 450-500°F, the HCI (Hydrocarbon Injector) or Dosing Valve is failing, or the DOC is face-plugged. DPF Delta P (Pressure Drop): Compare actual vs. calculated soot load (ECM parameter). If Delta P is high but ECM soot load is low, the DPF Delta P Sensor or lines are plugged/leaking (common).   4. Air Handling: EGR Valve: Command 0% / 100% in Davie4; watch position feedback vs. command. Sticking = soot. VGT Actuator: Sweep test. Stuck vanes = low boost = smoke. CAC Leak Test:* Pressurize to 30 psi. Leaks = low boost = soot.
  5. DPF Delta P Sensor Lines: Critical. Disconnect at sensor and DPF fittings. Blow out with shop air. Soot plugs the sensor side line, reading falsely low Delta P, preventing regen initiation.

Only if all above pass: Flow test DPF (bench) or replace. Cleaning a mechanically sound DPF on a truck with a bad HCI or leaking injector is warranty fraud.
