- Verify Codes & Parameters - Pull active/inactive codes (J1939) - Check DPF differential pressure (psid) – should be <5 psi at idle, <20 psi under load - Monitor soot load % (should regenerate at 40-45%, not 60%+)
- Check Regeneration History - Review last successful regen (distance, duration, soot reduction) - If regens aren't completing, check: - Coolant temperature (must be 160°F+ for regen) - Exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors – faulty EGT can prevent regen - Fuel pressure to dosing module
- Inspect for Root Causes - Oil consumption – check PCV system, valve stem seals - Fuel quality – water in fuel, incorrect cetane - Air intake leaks – turbo boot, air filter restriction - DEF quality – contaminated DEF affects SCR/DPF coordination
- Active Diagnostics - Perform manual regen with scan tool - Monitor soot load drop – if <50% reduction, DPF physically plugged - Check exhaust backpressure – >5 psi at 100% load indicates restriction
Before DPF Cleaning:
- Confirm soot load >80% AND failed regen attempts
- Rule out upstream issues (oil/fuel/air)
- Check warranty status – Paccar covers DPF 5 years/unlimited miles
Red Flags for Replacement vs. Cleaning:
- Cracked substrate (visible through inspection port)
- Soot load >90% after multiple failed regens
- Differential pressure >25 psi under normal operation
If regens complete but soot returns within a week, focus on engine health (oil consumption, fuel system) rather than DPF cleaning.
