GFCI vs. AFCI: The Basics
A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects against electric shock by detecting current leaking to ground (like through a person) and tripping fast. It monitors the balance between hot and neutral wires—if even 5 milliamps is missing, it trips in milliseconds.
An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects against fires by detecting dangerous arcing conditions in the wiring—like damaged cords, loose connections, or nails through cables. It looks for the unique electrical signature of arcing and trips before things overheat and ignite.
Why Both in Your Bedroom/Bath Setup
Per NEC 2020 (210.12 & 210.8), bedrooms require AFCI protection (fire prevention), while bathrooms require GFCI protection (shock prevention). Since your bedroom shares a wall with a bathroom, you likely have a dual-function breaker (combination type) that provides both protections on one circuit.
Practical Example:
- If a lamp cord gets damaged and arcs inside the wall → AFCI trips (prevents fire)
- If you drop your hair dryer in the sink → GFCI trips (prevents electrocution)
Bottom Line: AFCI = fire safety, GFCI = shock safety. You need both because bedrooms have hidden wiring risks (AFCI) and bathrooms have water/shock risks (GFCI). A dual-function breaker handles both requirements efficiently.
