Why it matters: R-410A is a near-azeotropic blend (R-32/R-125, 50/50%). While it behaves similarly to a single-component refrigerant, the two components have different boiling points. If you charge as a vapor, the more volatile component (R-32) enters the system first, leaving the remaining cylinder charge rich in R-125. This fractionation alters the blend ratio in both the cylinder and the system, destroying the refrigerant’s rated capacity, efficiency, and pressure-temperature (P/T) relationship. The system will not perform to spec.

Correct Procedure:

  1. Invert the cylinder (valve down) to draw liquid from the dip tube.
  2. Use a throttling valve or restrictor device (orifice/charging adapter) on your manifold gauge set between the cylinder and the low-side service port.
  3. Meter the liquid slowly into the suction (low) side. The restrictor flashes the liquid to a safe vapor/mist before it hits the compressor, preventing liquid slugging and compressor damage.
  4. Never open the high-side valve on the manifold while the compressor is running.
