What's Actually Happening:
On cold mornings, your heat pump enters defrost mode — this is normal operation, not a malfunction. Here's the process:
- Ice builds up on the outdoor coil during heating operation (especially when ambient temps drop below 40°F).
- The system automatically switches to defrost mode — temporarily reversing into air conditioning mode.
- The outdoor coil gets hot, melting the ice. You'll see steam (water vapor) rising from the unit — this is normal.
- The indoor air may feel cooler for 5-15 minutes during this cycle.
When It's a Real Problem:
- Steam lasts more than 30 minutes — indicates a defrost control issue
- No steam but ice buildup visible — defrost cycle isn't activating
- Unit runs constantly in cold weather without adequate heating
- Ice thicker than 1/4 inch that doesn't clear during defrost
- Cold air for more than 20 minutes continuously
