Cut & Prep
- Use a proper tube cutter (not a hacksaw) for square, burr-free cuts. Rotate and tighten gradually.
- Ream the outside of the tube to remove any remaining burr.
- Cut deeper than needed—measure twice, cut once.
Flaring
- Use a double-flare tool (most mini-splits use SAE 45° flares).
- Clamp the tube flush against the tool's stop. The flare face should sit ~1/32" above the tube end.
- Apply light oil to the cone. Don't over-tighten the tool—follow manufacturer specs.
- Inspect the flare: smooth, even, no cracks or splits.
Installation
- Hand-tighten the flare nut, then use two wrenches—one on the nut, one on the fitting body. Over-tightening cracks flares.
- Torque to manufacturer specs (typically 15-25 ft-lbs for 1/4" and 3/8" lines).
Test
- Pressure test with nitrogen at 300-500 PSI for 24+ hours before evacuation.
- Soap test all joints.
