Three critical failures:
- Atrazine + Heat = Dead St. Augustine. Atrazine is strictly prohibited on St. Augustinegrass when air temps exceed 85–90°F (label dependent). At 95°F, this causes severe phytotoxicity (yellowing, thinning, death). Check the specific product label; most Scotts/Lesco/Andersons atrazine labels cap application at 85°F or 90°F.
- High Nitrogen + Drought/Heat = Burn & Disease. 1.5 lb N/1,000 ft² of fast-release N (29-0-4 is largely urea/ammonium sulfate) on drought-stressed turf in 95°F heat guarantees fertilizer burn and fuels Gray Leaf Spot and Take-All Root Rot. UF/IFAS recommends ≤0.5 lb soluble N/1,000 ft² in summer stress; zero N if dormant/drought-stressed.
- No Irrigation = Illegal Application & Zero Weed Control. "Weed-and-feed" granules must be watered in (typically ¼–½") to activate the herbicide (move atrazine into root zone) and dissolve fertilizer off leaf blades. Applying pesticide/fertilizer without required activation violates the label (FIFRA) and state pesticide statutes. Water restrictions rarely ban pesticide activation watering; check local ordinance for "pesticide/fertilizer watering-in" exemptions.
Correct Protocol:
- Stop. Do not apply.
- Weeds: Spot-treat broadleaves with a temperature-safe post-emergent (e.g., Celsius WG, Blindside, or 2,4-D + dicamba + mecoprop blends labeled for St. Aug at current temps). Read label for max temp limits.
- Fertility: Apply 0 lb N now. Wait for cooler temps/rain. Next window: Fall (Sept/Oct) with slow-release N (≤1 lb N/1,000 ft², 50%+ SRN).
- Water: If irrigation is truly banned, no granular herbicide/fertilizer can be applied.
