You painted in direct sun on a scorching substrate. That’s the failure.
What happened:
- Flash time collapsed. At 100°F+ surface temp, 100% acrylic skins over in minutes, not the 30–60 mins the can assumes at 77°F. You rolled wet into tacky film → lap marks and dragging.
- Substrate heat drives moisture out. Stucco holds water. Hot wall = rapid vapor drive. Paint traps moisture or loses binder to the substrate → poor film formation, weak adhesion.
- Viscosity drop. Paint thins in the bucket/roller in that heat, but the wall flashes instantly. You get uneven film build.
Code/Standard References:
- PDCA P1-16 / P2-16: Requires surface temp 50–90°F for application. You were 10°F+ over max.
- ASTM D16 / Manufacturer Data Sheets (Sherwin Duration, BM Aura, Dunn-Edwards Evershield, etc.): All specify max surface temp 90°F (some 95°F). None rate 100°F+.
- FBC 2023 / IBC 2021 Ch. 25: Requires application per manufacturer’s printed instructions. You violated them.
Fix (do not recoat until):
- Stop. Wait for shade or next AM (surface < 90°F, dew point spread > 5°F).
- Sand lap marks smooth. Spot-prime if substrate exposed.
- Thin 5–10% water (per mfr max) only if needed for flow — but cool the wall first.
- Work shade-to-shade: Start east walls AM, follow shade west. Or tent/scaffold with mesh.
- Check surface temp with IR gun every hour. Not air temp. Surface temp.
Bottom line: No additive fixes 100°F substrate. Schedule around the sun.
