Immediate Life Safety Hazards:
- Explosion/Fire (Highest Risk): Oil-based polyurethane vapors are heavier than air and travel along floors. A standing pilot light on a gas water heater in an adjacent closet is a guaranteed ignition source per IRC M1305.1.3.1 / IFGC 304.1 (appliances in garages/adjacent spaces require ignition source elevation, but utility closets communicate with living space). Vapors will find the pilot. Stop work immediately. Extinguish pilot. Ventilate aggressively.
- Asphyxiation/Toxicity: Paper dust masks (N95 or nuisance dust) offer zero protection against organic vapors (VOCs: mineral spirits, toluene, xylene). Crew is inhaling neurotoxins. Requires NIOSH-approved supplied-air respirator (SAR) or full-facepiece PAPR with OV cartridges per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and product SDS. Half-face APR with OV cartridges is minimum for brush/roll; spraying mandates supplied air due to aerosol + vapor load.
- Oxygen Deficiency: Closed windows + displacement by heavy solvent vapors creates IDLH atmosphere near floor level.
Code/Standard Violations:
- IRC R303.1 / IMC 403.3: Mechanical ventilation required during hazardous operations.
- NFPA 30 / 101: Flammable liquid handling (Class IB/IC) requires ventilation to keep vapors <25% LEL.
- OSHA 1926.55 / 1910.1000: Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) for solvents exceeded instantly in unventilated spray.
Required Corrective Actions (Before Resuming):
- Evacuate occupants & crew. Shut off gas to water heater at valve; extinguish pilot.
- Establish cross-ventilation: Open windows/doors on opposite sides. Place explosion-proof fans (rated Class I Div 1) blowing out at low level. Target >4 air changes/hr.
- Respiratory Protection: Supplied-air system (compressor + hoods) for all in work zone. Fit-tested.
- Ignition Control: No switches, thermostats, tools, phones in vapor zone. Post "No Ignition Sources" signs.
- Fire Watch: Extinguisher (Class B) manned during application and 4+ hrs after.
- Containment: Seal HVAC returns/supplies in work area (poly + tape) to prevent distribution.
Do not spray oil-based finish in occupied structures without full containment, supplied air, and eliminated ignition sources. Water-based alternatives exist for a reason.
