Installation Steps (IRC R905.2.8.2 / IBC 1503.2):

  1. Locate: Center penetration between rafters. Cut hole 3-1/4" to 3-1/2" diameter (pipe OD + 1/4"–1/2" clearance).
  2. Underlayment: Run roof underlayment (felt/synthetic) up to the hole. Cut an "X" in the underlayment over the hole, fold flaps up and into the pipe, tape to pipe temporarily.
  3. Shingle Up: Install shingles up to the vent. Cut the course above the vent to fit around the pipe (leave 1/4" gap).
  4. Apply Sealant: Run a thick bead of ASTM D4586 Type II asphalt roof cement (or high-quality polyurethane/silicone) on the underside of the boot flange and on the shingles where the flange will sit.
  5. Set Boot: Slide boot down over pipe. Bottom flange rests ON TOP of the lower shingles. Side flanges sit ON TOP of side shingles. Top flange sits UNDER the upper shingle course.
  6. Nail: Use 1-1/4" galvanized roofing nails with plastic caps (or large heads). Nail only the top 1/3 of the flange (under the upper shingle course) and the top corners of side flanges. Do not nail bottom flange. Space nails ~4" o.c.
  7. Seal & Finish: Seal all nail heads and the pipe-to-boot collar joint with roof cement. Press upper shingle course down into sealant. Trim boot collar to fit pipe height if needed (leave min 1" above roof).

Why Neoprene over Lead?

  • Code: IRC R905.2.8.2 accepts "premanufactured flashings." Lead requires field fabrication (IRC R905.2.8.1) – harder to seal reliably at the pipe collar.
  • Durability: Quality EPDM/neoprene boots last 20–30+ years. Lead cracks from fatigue/thermal movement; theft risk.
  • Seal: Integral flexible collar seals pipe better than soldered/caulked lead joint.
  • Cost/Time: $15–$25 vs. $40+ lead + labor.

Exception: Use lead (4 lb. min.) or copper only for high-heat vents (Type B gas vent, some commercial), tile/slate roofs, or historic districts requiring it. For standard 3" PVC/ABS plumbing vent on asphalt shingles: Neoprene boot is the correct, professional choice.
