At 22 ft eave height, you have clearance if anchored at ridge level. If anchored lower, you hit the ground. Swing Fall Hazard: Anchors must be positioned directly above the work area (or use opposing anchors) to prevent swinging into walls/ground.
Practical Setup:
- Ridge Anchors: Install manufactured ridge anchors (rated 5k lbs) along the peak before crew accesses roof.
- Vertical Lifelines: Run 5/8" synthetic rope from ridge anchors to ground. One line per worker.
- Rope Grabs: Provide automatic, locking rope grabs (ANSI Z359.15).
- Harnesses: Full-body, dorsal D-ring attachment only.
- Slide Guards/Toeboards: Required on eaves/rake edges per 1926.501(b)(11) & (b)(10) to prevent material slides.
Written Plan: 1926.502(k) requires a site-specific Fall Protection Plan if conventional methods are "infeasible" (rare for 8:12). Document your anchor locations, rescue plan, and inspection logs.
Bottom line: No body belts. No "tying off to the chimney." Ridge anchors + vertical lifelines + rope grabs + harnesses. Inspect daily.
