To ensure 4×8 ft (48″) sheathing breaks on a stud when using 16″ on-center (OC) stud spacing:
- Mark the first stud at 12″ from the corner (or starting edge). - This aligns the 48″ sheathing panel edge with a stud at 12″ + 48″ = 60″, which is a stud location (60″ ÷ 16″ = 3.75 bays → 4th stud at 64″ OC, but 60″ is a stud since 16×3.75=60). - Wait—correct calculation: Studs at 16″ OC means studs at 0″, 16″, 32″, 48″, 64″, etc. To make a 48″ panel end on a stud, start the first stud at 12″ so the panel spans 12″–60″ (48″), ending at 60″ (a stud location: 16×3.75=60).
- Mark every 16″ OC from there: 12″, 28″, 44″, 60″, 76″, etc.
This ensures each 48″ panel starts and ends on a stud. If starting at 0″, the first panel (0″–48″) ends on a stud, but subsequent panels (48″–96″) also align. However, starting at 12″ accounts for typical corner conditions and avoids awkward cuts at the edge.
Code note: IRC R602.3 requires studs at 16″ OC for exterior walls (for seismic/wind loads). Always verify local codes.
Practical tip: Use a layout ruler or chalk line to mark 12″, then 16″ increments. Double-check before cutting sheathing.
