Three-ply 2x12 Girder Assembly:
Nailing Pattern:
- Use 16d common nails (3 1/2")
- Stagger joints between adjacent plies by at least 24 inches
- Nail spacing: 3 rows per ply interface, 12" o.c. in each row
- Edge distance: Minimum 3/4" from board edges
- End distance: Minimum 3" from ply ends
Joint Placement:
- Middle ply: Joints at 8', 16', 24' (every 8 feet)
- Outer plies: Stagger so joints fall at 4', 12', 20' and 12', 20', 28' respectively
- This creates a broken joint pattern - no more than 2 plies joined at any point
Assembly Steps:
- Lay first ply (bottom) - joints at 8', 16', 24'
- Lay second ply - joints at 4', 12', 20', 28' (offset 4' from bottom)
- Lay third ply (top) - joints at 12', 20', 28' (offset 4' from middle)
- Nail each interface with 3 rows of 16d nails at 12" o.c.
Code Reference: IRC R502.3.1 requires floor beams to be constructed to resist uplift and lateral forces. The staggered joint pattern prevents weak planes.
Posts: Space posts at maximum 8' o.c. for 2x12 girders (IRC R502.3.2).
Safety: Wear eye protection when nailing - 16d nails require significant force. Consider using a pneumatic nailer for consistent penetration.
