Splices:

  • Each splice must have at least 6 inches of bearing on the stud below.
  • Use full-width material (no scarf joints or narrow splices).

Corners:

  • At interior corners, the top plates must be continuous around the corner (no breaks).
  • At exterior corners, the double top plate must wrap the corner with both plates continuous around the corner.
  • If a single plate is used at a corner, it must be at least 3 inches from the edge of the framing.

Gaps:

  • Maximum gap between plates: 1/8 inch (IRC R602.3.2).
  • If gap exceeds 1/8 inch, use metal ties or straps to secure the plates together.

Additional notes:

  • All splices must be fully supported by studs below.
  • Use nails or screws to secure plates together (minimum 16d nails or equivalent).

Splices (Straight Runs):

  • End joints in the top and bottom plates of the double top plate must be offset ≥ 24 in. (R602.3.2).
  • Nailing at splices: 8-16d nails (3½" × 0.162") each side of the joint (16 total per splice) to tie the two plates together (Table R602.3(1), Item 12). If using a nail gun, verify your 3¼" gun nails are code-approved for this; often 3½" hand-driven or specific 3¼" sinkers are required.

Corners & Intersections (The "Tie"):

  • Lap Requirement: Plates must lap at corners and bearing partitions (R602.3.2).
  • Overlap Length: Minimum 48 inches overlap of the top plate over the bottom plate (or vice versa) at the corner (R602.3.2 Exception / general practice).
  • Nailing at Laps: 8-16d nails at each end of the lap (16 total) to tie the intersecting walls together (Table R602.3(1), Item 13).
  • Cap Plate Continuity: The top plate (cap plate) must be continuous over the corner. You cannot butt the cap plate into the side of the other wall's cap plate; it must lap over the top plate of the intersecting wall.

Common Failures:

  1. Splices < 24" apart (stacked joints).
  2. Cap plate butted at corner instead of lapped.
  3. Insufficient nails at splices/laps (often 4 nails used instead of 8).
  4. Splice located directly over a stud bay (weakens plate); keep splices over studs if possible, but 24" offset is the hard rule.

Fix: Cut plates to achieve 24" offset. Add 8-16d nails per side at every splice and every corner lap. If plates are already nailed, add straps (Simpson MST/CS) per manufacturer specs if nailing access is blocked.
