Solvent-Welding 3″ PVC DWV: Step-by-Step (ASTM D2855 / IPC 705.5.1)
- Cut Square & Deburr Use a ratchet cutter or fine-tooth saw. Cut square (±2°). Chamfer the pipe OD 10–15° (≈1/8″) with a file or chamfer tool. Critical: prevents wiping cement out of the fitting socket. * Ream ID to remove burrs.
- Dry-Fit & Mark Insert pipe fully into fitting hub. It should hit bottom with hand pressure only (interference fit starts ~1/3 depth). Mark alignment lines on pipe & fitting with a marker. IPC 705.5.1: joints must be properly aligned.
- Clean (Don’t Skip) Wipe both pipe OD and fitting socket ID with PVC Primer (Purple). Use a dauber ≥1/2 pipe diameter. Primer must soften/penetrate surfaces—surface should look glossy/tacky, not just wet. ASTM F656 primer required.
- Apply Cement Use Medium-bodied, Fast-set PVC Cement (ASTM D2564) rated for 3″ DWV (e.g., Oatey Medium Clear, Christy’s Red Hot Blue Glue). Coat fitting socket first (full depth), then pipe OD (full insertion depth + 1/2″). Heavy, even coat—no puddles, no dry spots. Work fast: open time ~30–60 sec in heat.*
- Assemble Immediately Insert pipe fully to bottom in one continuous motion. Rotate 1/4 turn while inserting to distribute cement evenly. Align your marks. Hold firm for 30 seconds* (3″ pipe has high push-out force). Wipe excess bead (leave a small bead for visual inspection).
- Cure Time (Critical) Do not pressure test or move. Minimum cure before handling: 2 hrs (60–100°F), 4 hrs (40–60°F), 8+ hrs (<40°F). Before pressure test (10 ft head / 4.3 psi): 24 hrs (60–100°F), 48 hrs (<60°F). ASTM D2855 Table 1.*
Pro Tips:
- Temp <40°F? Warm cement can & pipe (truck cab, bucket of warm water). Keep cement >40°F.
- Ventilate. Primer/cement vapors are flammable & toxic.
- One joint at a time. Don’t pre-coat multiple fittings.
- Inspect: Full bead around circumference = good joint. Gaps/voids = cut out & redo.
