1. No Primer = No Code-Compliant Joint (IPC 705.5.2 / UPC 705.1.2) "All-in-one" cement is not listed for 4-inch DWV pressure testing or sewer applications in any major plumbing code. Primer is mandatory for 4-inch pipe to penetrate the gloss and soften the PVC. Without it, you have a surface bond only—zero shear strength.
2. No Twist = No Solvent Distribution Twisting (¼ turn) distributes cement evenly and breaks surface tension. Without it, you have voids and unbonded channels. The joint relies entirely on the cement's shrink-wrap grip, which is negligible on 4-inch pipe.
3. 42°F = Cure Time is Hours, Not Minutes (ASTM D2855) At 40–50°F, minimum cure before pressure test is 2–4 hours (per Oatey/Weld-On specs). At 10 minutes, the solvent hasn't evaporated; the joint is lubricated, not fused. 30 psi air pressure will push those joints apart like pistons.
4. Air Test on DWV = Life Safety Hazard (IPC 312.3 / UPC 712.1) Never air-test PVC DWV. Air compresses; water doesn't. A 4-inch joint failure at 30 psi releases ~3,700 lbs of explosive force. Shrapnel kills. Codes require 10-ft head water test (4.3 psi).
Immediate Action:
- Evacuate the trench/area. Bleed air pressure remotely if possible.
- Cut every joint out. You cannot "re-glue" over failed cement.
- Re-do with Primer (Purple), Cement, Twist, Hold 30 sec.
- Wait 4+ hours (cold weather). Test with WATER ONLY.
Tell the helper: "You just built 12 expensive couplings, not joints. We're cutting them all out."
